During a series of recorded conversations with 4 residents of Stockbridge Care Home, aged between 74 and 92, I gained an insight into some personal stories of Edinburgh. These "snapshots of memory", as I like to call them, are displayed exactly the way they were spoken and grouped according to the individual spokesperson, behind a set of doors.

This project was born out of a genuine sense of curiosity I felt when moving to Britain and to Edinburgh. My aim was to delve beyond the obvious and to find out about people's personal attachments to a city as opposed to the more formal and official histories that are more widely published. The anecdotes I gathered became the inspirational framework for the series of illustrations displayed during my degree show in 2012.

Through this project I have discovered a side of Edinburgh that otherwise may have not opened up to me. During the course of my work I became emotionally attached to places that I had previously only known by sight, and as a result I started to feel more involved with the city. The display aims to share these moments of curiosity and the subsequent feelings of discovery that I have experienced. This feeling is represented by the use of the doors through which I hope to encourage the viewers to engage with the work and to discover for themselves what lies beyond.
